Alexis Ohanian sketched the original Snoo during a marketing lecture at the University of Virginia in 2005, transferring the doodle to digital format on a jailbroken PlayStation Portable. That flat, black-outlined alien with orange eyes served as an unofficial mascot until the 2017 redesign isolated Snoo’s head inside a solid orange circle and set it beside a bolder VAG Rounded wordmark. The November 2023 rebrand, led by Pentagram’s Natasha Jen and her New York team, was the most comprehensive overhaul in Reddit’s history. Snoo became a fully three-dimensional character with opposable thumbs, a range of poses and expressions, and a new home inside the conversation bubble. The custom Reddit Display and Reddit Sans typefaces replaced VAG Rounded entirely, and the color palette was condensed from over 100 accumulated swatches to a disciplined set of 15.

Reddit Sans, the companion body face, was built for screen legibility with a large x-height, disambiguated letterforms, and accessibility-oriented design. The decision to render Snoo in 3D with Pixar-level expressiveness was calibrated to give the mascot enough personality to function as a standalone character across merchandise, events, and the “Snoomoji” sticker system.
The streamlined palette gives subreddit moderators a curated range for community customization while maintaining brand coherence. OrangeRed anchors all primary touchpoints, from the app icon to upvote arrows, while the secondary colors appear in community badges, loading states, and promotional materials. Snoo’s design rules remain strict despite the character’s expanded expressiveness: the head stays white, eyes stay OrangeRed, and the antenna retains its circular terminus. These constraints preserve recognizability across the thousands of custom Snoo variations that subreddit communities create. The rebrand launched just months before Reddit’s March 2024 IPO, giving the company a polished, cohesive identity system timed to its transition from a privately held community platform to a publicly traded media company.
