Free screenshot app for Mac

Show exactly what you mean.

ScreenKit is a free screenshot and screen-recording app with pixel-precise capture, measurements, annotations, and on-device OCR. It lives in your menu bar, and your captures stay on your Mac.

Free • macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later • Signed and notarized • Screen Recording permission only

One shortcut. The whole capture workflow.

Choose an area, a window, or the full screen. Then copy, share, annotate, or keep the capture close at hand, without interrupting your work.

  1. 1 Capture a precise area, window, or full screen.
  2. 2 Copy automatically or open the macOS share sheet.
  3. 3 Annotate immediately or return to the capture later.
  4. 4 Record an area and trim the result in ScreenKit.

Capture exactly what you need.

A magnifier follows your cursor while you select, so edges land where you expect them. Capture an area or window, grab the full screen with a shortcut, or enter exact dimensions directly on the overlay.

Pixel-precise selection

See the pixels beneath the crosshair and adjust the capture before you commit.

Stop eyeballing pixels.

Use the arrow keys to measure the gap between edges under the cursor. Hold Shift to measure outer bounds, then click to stamp the measurement onto the capture. It is a faster way to review spacing, document layouts, and explain visual bugs.

Measure it. Mark it. Send it.

Make every screenshot self-explanatory.

Crop the image, draw attention with arrows and shapes, highlight important lines, add numbered steps, or place an enlarged detail beside the original. The built-in editor gives you the tools to explain the point without opening another app.

  • · Crop and reframe
  • · Arrows, lines, and shapes
  • · Freehand highlighting
  • · Numbered steps
  • · Magnified detail callouts

Your clicks tell the story.

Record any selected area, pause and resume from the menu bar, and trim the result in the built-in editor. Optional cursor effects make actions easier to follow with click rings, press-and-hold feedback, a fading drag trail, and smooth automatic zoom on clicks.

Less explaining after the recording. More clarity inside it.

See text? Copy it.

Select any area to recognize its text and place it on the clipboard. Optical character recognition runs on-device through Apple’s Vision framework, and no screenshot needs to be saved.

See a color? Grab it.

Press C while capturing to copy the hex value beneath the crosshair. Press ⇧C to open the color on brandkit.pro/colors.

Capture now. Find it when you need it.

Every screenshot is copied to the clipboard and stored locally in Captures. Open it later to crop or annotate, drag it to another app, reveal it in Finder, or send it through the macOS share sheet.

Keep captures forever, or clean them up automatically after 1, 7, 15, or 30 days.

No proprietary upload step.

Use the system share sheet to send a screenshot with AirDrop, Messages, Mail, and other installed apps. Or drag the capture thumbnail directly to Finder, a browser drop zone, or another app.

Keep captures forever, or clean them up automatically after 1, 7, 15, or 30 days.

Private by design.

ScreenKit does not upload your screenshots or recognized text. Captures are stored locally, and OCR runs on-device through Apple’s Vision framework. The only permission ScreenKit requests is Screen Recording, the macOS permission required to capture your screen.

ScreenKit connects for its daily update check. That check also contributes to anonymous, aggregate install counts. It does not include the content of your captures.

  • No screenshot uploads
  • On-device text recognition
  • Local capture storage
  • Automatic retention controls
  • One macOS permission

Install ScreenKit free in under a minute.

  1. 1. Download the latest DMG.
  2. 2. Drag ScreenKit to Applications.
  3. 3. Open it and grant Screen Recording access when macOS asks.

Builds are signed and notarized. ScreenKit checks for updates daily and installs the next update when you quit the app.
